What does the idiom “Breathe Easier (Easy)” mean?

Definition:

Feel (more) secure after a period of difficulty

For example:

“I think we can breathe easier now that we’ve met the sales quota. The district manager will begin worrying about other offices.”

Notes:

This idiom is common even though it’s grammatically incorrect. No one would say “breathe more easily.”
