What does the idiom “Buy the Farm” mean?
Definition:
To die
For example:
“Don’t ride your bicycle without a light at night; it’s a good way to buy the farm.”
Notes:
This possibly originated in wartime, when families of pilots who crashed would be given insurance money with which to buy a farm.
