To walk on eggshells is to try very hard to avoid giving offense or causing trouble.

 

For example:

“Ever since my boss yelled at me, I’ve been walking on eggshells around him.”
“It’s not good to have to walk on eggshells around your romantic partner. It may be difficult to say what you feel, but it’s better in the long run.”
